Gavdos: The Greek Coast Guard announced Wednesday that three migrants drowned after their wooden boat capsized off the island of Gavdos, located in the far south of Greece. The Coast Guard is continuing its search for a number of missing persons.
According to Qatar News Agency, the Coast Guard explained that the people on board the boat moved quickly to one side when a vessel belonging to the European Union (EU) Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) approached, causing it to capsize.
A Coast Guard official said that 55 people have been rescued so far, including one injured person who was transferred to a hospital on the nearby island of Crete. He added that the survivors reported that the boat was carrying more people when it capsized about 28 kilometers from Gavdos.
At least four ships and an aircraft from the EU border agency Frontex are participating in the search for survivors. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) confirmed earlier Wednesday that at least 42 other migrants are missing and presumed dead after a rubber boat capsized off the coast of Libya last week.
