Magnitude 5.6 Earthquake Strikes Northern Chile

Aysen: An earthquake measuring magnitude 5.6 on the Richter scale struck on Monday across the Aysen coast in northern Chile. The seismic event has raised concerns in a region known for its vulnerability to such natural phenomena.

According to Qatar News Agency, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the epicenter of the quake occurred 531.9 km from the Los Lagos region at a depth of 10 km. Despite the magnitude of the quake, there have been no reports of casualties or material damage.

Chile's history with earthquakes is significant, as seen in 2010 when a massive magnitude 8.8 earthquake followed by a tsunami struck central and southern parts of the country, resulting in the loss of 500 lives. The country is situated on the "Ring of Fire," an arc of faults surrounding the Pacific Ocean basin, making it prone to frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity.
