Japanese Nikkei Closes Up 0.43 Percent as SoftBank and Sony Influence Market

Tokyo: The Japanese Nikkei 225 index closed up 0.43 percent on Wednesday, after SoftBank Group trimmed its losses, while Sony Group helped the broader TOPIX index close at a new high thanks to strong full-year earnings forecasts. The Nikkei ended the day at 51,063.31 after volatile trade, and the broader TOPIX jumped 1.14 percent to close at a record high of 3,359.33. Meanwhile, SoftBank's stock closed down 3.46 percent.

According to Qatar News Agency, heavily weighted chip-related stocks experienced a downturn, with shares of Advantest and Tokyo Electron falling by 0.23 percent and 1.55 percent, respectively. In contrast, TDK Corporation, an electronic components maker, saw its stock jump 4.92 percent, becoming the biggest contributor to the Nikkei's gains, while drugmaker Chugai Pharmaceutical Co. rose 4.37 percent.

The share of Mitsui Kinzoku, a manufacturer of AI data center materials, surged 23.27 percent, and Sony rose 3.67 percent. Bank shares also witnessed an upswing, with shares of Mitsubishi Financial Group and Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group gaining 3.38 percent and 1.95 percent, respectively.

Of the more than 1,600 stocks trading on the Tokyo Stock Exchange's prime market, 78 percent rose, 19 percent fell, and 2 percent traded flat, further highlighting the positive momentum in the market.
