Doha: Argentina has announced its withdrawal from the World Health Organization (WHO), according to presidential spokesperson Manuel Adorni, who justified the decision with "profound differences in health management, especially during the (COVID-19) pandemic".
According to Qatar News Agency, "President Javier Milei instructed Minister of Foreign Affairs Gerardo Werthein to withdraw Argentina's participation in the World Health Organization," Adorni said in a press conference in Buenos Aires.
Argentine President Javier Milei's decision follows in the footsteps of US President Donald Trump, who initiated the process of withdrawing the United States from the WHO with an executive order on his first day in office on January 21.
The loss of another member state will further dismantle cooperation in the field of global health, although Argentina was expected to contribute only $8 million to the organization's estimated budget of $6.9 billion for 2024-2025.
