Israeli Offensive Damages 226 Archeological Sites in Gaza Strip

Gaza Strip: The Palestinian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities announced Thursday that 226 archaeological sites in the Gaza Strip had been damaged by the Israeli occupation's genocide, which targeted all sites during the 15-month aggression.

According to Qatar News Agency, the ministry's report on the assessment of the damages and risks at the cultural heritage sites due to war stated that 138 sites had been largely affected. It further detailed that 61 sites sustained moderate damage, while 27 sites experienced minor damage, with 90 sites remaining undamaged.

The report emphasized the significance of these historic archaeological sites as a critical part of the history and identity of the Palestinian people and accused the Israeli occupation army of intentionally destroying this crucial aspect of the Palestinian national identity.

The report also outlined the financial requirements for the recovery of the cultural heritage sector, estimating a total budget of approximately EUR 261.15 million. This budget is planned to be allocated in three phases: the first phase focuses on urgent interventions to protect endangered sites with a budget of EUR 31.2 million, the second phase involves partial restoration costing EUR 96.72 million, and the third phase aims at rebuilding the threatened sites with a budget of EUR 133.23 million. The entire restoration project is projected to span eight years.
