6.2-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Greece’s Crete, Felt by Residents of Egypt

Doha: A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck Thursday the Greek island of Crete, 499 km north of Marsa Matruh, northwest of Egypt.

According to Qatar News Agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said in a statement that the earthquake occurred 61 km from the city of Agios Nikolaos, at a depth of 75 km.

There have been no reports of injuries or damage due to the earthquake so far. Egypt's National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG) said in a statement that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 68.91 km and was felt by residents of Egypt. It noted that no casualties or property damage were reported.

Greece is located in an active seismic zone, where strong earthquakes occur from time to time.
