According to Qatar News Agency, the US Geological Survey reported that the earthquake's epicenter was located 615 km from the island's Ohonua area, at a depth of 10 km.
No casualties or material damage have been reported due to the earthquake so far.
Tonga, an archipelago of 176 islands in the South Pacific Ocean, is prone to seismic activity due to its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire.
