Addis Ababa: The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has announced that it will cease food assistance to 650,000 malnourished women and children in Ethiopia by May due to severe funding shortfalls.
According to Qatar News Agency, the WFP has cautioned that without immediate new funding, 3.6 million of Ethiopia's most vulnerable individuals are at risk of losing access to the organization's essential food and nutrition support in the coming weeks. The WFP in Ethiopia is currently facing a financial deficit of USD 222 million for the period between April and September 2025.
Furthermore, ongoing conflicts, regional instability, displacement, harsh climatic conditions, and economic shocks have resulted in over 10 million people experiencing hunger and malnutrition across Ethiopia.
