Doha: The United Nations confirmed that it had received a formal notification from the US government concerning its withdrawal from the Paris climate change agreement. The letter was received at the UN headquarters in New York, according to Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General Stephane Dujarric.
According to Qatar News Agency, Dujarric stated, "I can confirm to you that the United States has notified the Secretary-General, in his capacity as depositary, of its withdrawal, on 27 January of this year, from the Paris Agreement." This notification marks a significant step in the process of the United States formally leaving the global agreement aimed at addressing climate change.
Dujarric noted that per Article 28, paragraph 2, of the Paris Agreement, the withdrawal of the United States will take effect on 27 January 2026. This timeline adheres to the stipulated period required for a country to exit the agreement officially.
He added, "We reaffirm our commitment to the Paris Agreement and to support all effective efforts to limit the rise in global temperature to 1.5 degrees Celsius," emphasizing the UN's continued dedication to combating climate change amid the US's decision.
The announcement follows President Trump's earlier declaration on his first day back in the White House that the United States would leave the accord, underscoring a significant shift in US environmental policy.
