United Nations: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres renewed his call for rapid action to save the region from the threat of war amid the Israeli-Iranian conflict, warning that the confrontation is escalating rapidly and causing heavy losses.
According to Qatar News Agency, in remarks at the UN Security Council, Guterres stated, "The expansion of this conflict could ignite a fire that no one can control. We must not let that happen." He emphasized the urgency by saying, "We are not drifting toward crisis.. we are racing towards it. We are not witnessing isolated incidents.. we are on course to potential chaos."
The Secretary-General highlighted the nuclear issue as central to the conflict and stressed the importance of non-proliferation for global safety. He noted Iran's repeated statements that it does not seek to possess nuclear weapons.
Guterres further explained, "The only way to bridge that gap is through diplomacy to establish a credible, comprehensive and verifiable solution - including full access to inspectors of the IAEA, as the United Nations technical agency in this field."
He appealed for an end to fighting and a return to serious negotiations, urging the international community to support the path of diplomacy grounded in international law, including the UN Charter. He underscored the importance of this approach given the ongoing situation in Gaza.
The UN Security Council held an emergency session under the item "Threats to international peace and security" to discuss the escalation between Israel and Iran. Iran requested the meeting, with Algeria, China, Pakistan, and Russia supporting it.
