UN Calls for Final Solution to Rohingya Minority Crisis

Geneva: The United Nations called Friday for an end to the ongoing ordeal of the Rohingya Muslim minority in Myanmar, eight years after a crackdown that forced more than a million of them to flee to neighboring Bangladesh.

According to Qatar News Agency, Jeremy Laurence, spokesperson for the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, emphasized the lack of justice for the violence initiated in 2017 in Myanmar. He questioned when the ongoing suffering and crimes against the Rohingya community will be resolved. During a press conference at the UN Office in Geneva, Laurence highlighted the importance of addressing impunity and securing the Rohingya's rights to security, citizenship, and equality as crucial steps for breaking the cycle of violence.

Laurence pointed out that serious atrocity crimes against the Rohingya are being committed with impunity, blatantly violating international law. Many of the stateless Muslim minority now reside in Bangladesh, where they face overcrowded and inadequate living conditions in camps, with widespread malnutrition being a significant concern.
