Infant Death Due to Malnutrition Highlights Gaza’s Humanitarian Crisis

Gaza: A Palestinian infant succumbed to hunger and malnutrition at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, located in the southern Gaza Strip, increasing the total number of famine and malnutrition victims to 272, of which 113 are children.

According to Qatar News Agency, a medical source indicated that the infant died from starvation-related complications, with hospitals unable to provide essential care because of critical shortages in food and medicine. The child's mother is similarly affected by malnutrition.

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to expand as Israel's blockade on all Gaza crossings remains in place, obstructing the flow of food and medical supplies. This extreme famine is occurring alongside the ongoing conflict affecting Gaza since October 7, 2023.

The UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) had previously cautioned about the severe malnutrition affecting children under five, noting that cases have doubled from March to June due to the blockade. The World Health Organization (WHO) has corroborated that malnutrition levels have reached alarming levels in Gaza, attributing this to Israeli actions and delays in humanitarian aid deliveries.
