Syrian President Ratifies Interim Electoral System for People’s Assembly

Doha: Syrian President Ahmad Al Shara'a ratified Wednesday the interim electoral system for the Syrian People's Assembly.

According to Qatar News Agency, the newly ratified electoral system establishes the total number of members for the Syrian People's Assembly at 210. Two-thirds of these members will be elected by electoral colleges in various electoral districts across the administrative regions, while the remaining third will be appointed by the President of the Republic.

The seats in the assembly are distributed based on the population representation of each governorate. The system mandates the formation of the Supreme Committee for People's Assembly Elections in Damascus, which will serve as an independent and impartial body overseeing the entire electoral process.

Additionally, the system includes the establishment of subcommittees in districts and judicial appeals committees in governorates to ensure the integrity of the elections and provide a mechanism for objections. The decree outlines conditions for membership in these electoral committees and bodies, requiring that women hold no less than 20 percent of the representation. It also considers the representation of displaced persons, as well as families of martyrs and the wounded.

The elections, as stipulated by the decree, will be conducted by direct secret ballot at polling stations managed by subcommittees.
