Doha: Syrian President Ahmed al Sharaa issued two decrees on Friday, the first appointing Sheikh Osama Al Rifai as the Grand Mufti of the Syrian Republic, and the second establishing the Supreme Fatwa Council, according to the Syrian News Agency (SANA).
According to Qatar News Agency, in a speech during the council's formation and the appointment of the Grand Mufti, President al Sharaa emphasized efforts to rebuild Syria through its scholars, professionals, and citizens. He stated that the responsibility of issuing fatwas is no secret to anyone; it is a sacred trust and plays a crucial role in building the new state, especially after the institution of fatwa has been encroached upon by those unqualified to handle it.
He added that the Supreme Fatwa Council aims to regulate a balanced religious discourse that harmonizes tradition with modernity, preserves national identity, and resolves disputes that lead to division while shutting the door to discord and conflict.
The council will be responsible for issuing fatwas on emerging issues and public matters, providing religious rulings on cases referred to it, overseeing local fatwa offices across the provinces, and offering necessary support and guidance.
