Shura Council Discusses Proposal to Enhance Elderly Services and Privileges

Doha: The Shura Council convened its regular weekly session on Monday, chaired by HE Speaker Hassan bin Abdullah Al Ghanim, at the Tamim bin Hamad Hall at the Council’s headquarters. At the beginning of the session, HE Secretary-General of the Council, Naif bin Mohammed Al Mahmoud, read out the meeting agenda, and the Council approved the minutes of its previous session.

According to Qatar News Agency, during the session, the Council reviewed the report of the Social Affairs, Labor, and Housing Committee regarding the proposal submitted by HE Member Issa bin Ahmed Al Nasr. The proposal focuses on providing enhanced services and privileges to the elderly, aiming to strengthen care and support for this group in alignment with Qatar National Vision 2030.

HE Chairman of the Social Affairs, Labor, and Housing Committee, Abdulrahman bin Yousef Al Khulaifi, emphasized the need for a unified legislative framework to safeguard the rights of the elderly and improve service quality. He highlighted the importance of recognizing the contributions of the elderly to society and the nation.

The proposal presented several recommendations, including enacting a law to grant the elderly distinct privileges, designating parking spaces, and enhancing healthcare services. It also suggested allocating special areas in government service centers, exempting certain fees, and issuing official identification cards for discounts and benefits.

The Council approved the proposal and resolved to submit it to the government. Additionally, during the session, the Council approved and referred draft laws on lost property, water, and amendments to the Anti-Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing Law, and the Lawyers’ Law to respective committees for further study.

The session continued with discussions on internal regulation amendments, domestic worker recruitment offices, and national values promotion, referring relevant matters to appropriate committees for feedback. The Council also reviewed reports on participation in international forums and symposiums.

Senior officials from the Center for Empowerment and Care of the Elderly (Ehsan) attended the session.
