Qatar’s Permanent Representative to UN: Second Social Development Summit in Doha Marks First-Ever UNGA Meeting Outside New York and Geneva

Doha: HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations, Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, affirmed that the Second World Summit for Social Development, to be held in Doha, marks the first official meeting of the United Nations General Assembly to convene outside its traditional venues in New York and Geneva, in accordance with the Assembly's rules of procedure.

According to Qatar News Agency, Her Excellency stated that hosting this historic summit in Doha highlights the State of Qatar's role as a strategic partner of the United Nations. She noted that Doha will soon welcome the international community, driven by its commitment to global solidarity and multilateral cooperation.

Her Excellency emphasized that Qatar is ready to host the world once more in Doha, a city renowned for dialogue and partnership. She recalled Qatar's history of hosting significant United Nations conferences, including the 2008 Follow-up International Conference on Financing for Development, the 18th Conference of the Parties (COP18) to the UNFCCC in 2012, UNCTAD XIII, and the 5th United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC5) in 2023.

Sheikha Alya Al-Thani highlighted the upcoming Second World Summit for Social Development, scheduled for November 4 to 6, 2025. The summit aims to renew the commitments from Copenhagen and develop practical solutions for advancing social development.

Her Excellency noted that the summit will gather over 8,000 participants, including Member States, United Nations representatives, and stakeholders from various sectors. The event seeks to reaffirm commitments to social justice and translate them into actions centered around sustainable development.

Central to this summit is the "Doha Political Declaration," which calls for a global commitment to fostering environments conducive to inclusive social development. Key events include the inaugural meeting of the "Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty."

The summit also marks the "Doha Solutions Forum for Social Development," alongside the Private Sector Forum and the Civil Society Forum, at the Qatar National Convention Centre. These events aim to promote innovative initiatives for social development.

HE Sheikha Alya Al-Thani concluded by expressing that Doha continues to be a symbol of global solidarity, transforming commitments into inspiration and partnerships into progress, with a vision of an inclusive future of peace and prosperity.
