Doha: In their editorials Thursday, Qatari newspapers highlighted several local and regional issues, including the International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights titled 'Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights: Opportunities, Risks, and Visions for a Better Future,' organized by the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) in collaboration with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, the National Cyber Security Agency, and other international stakeholders.
According to Qatar News Agency, on the regional front, the newspapers spotlighted praise from the ASEAN-GCC-China Summit, held Tuesday in Kuala Lumpur. The summit commended Qatar's mediation efforts to reach a ceasefire in Gaza and condemned the ongoing Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people.
Al-Raya newspaper stated in its editorial that the State of Qatar considers human rights as an ethical obligation, stressing that Qatar never compromises on human rights, believing that principles are indivisible. The paper noted Qatar's strong stance against global violations and its continued call for an effective international mechanism to criminalize and hold violators accountable.
The editorial also praised Doha's hosting of the International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights and the resulting Doha Declaration, which reaffirmed the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, as well as the 1986 United Nations Declaration on the Right to Development, which emphasizes that every human person and all peoples are entitled to participate in, contribute to, and enjoy economic, social, cultural, and political development.
Al-Raya concluded by affirming that the protection of human rights is a strategic pillar of Qatar's foreign policy, with the country pledging to work with others to make tangible progress and defend vulnerable populations worldwide.
Meanwhile, Al-Watan daily emphasized Qatar's dedication to harnessing the vast potential of information and communication technologies as a cornerstone for sustainable development. The editorial pointed out that the State of Qatar integrates technology into its economic, social, environmental, and developmental programs.
It pointed out that the conference aimed to promote rights amid the rapid growth and expanding scope of modern technology. It also sought to strengthen a dynamic technological environment, thereby reinforcing Doha's status as one of the world's leading hubs for technology and innovation by striking the necessary balance between harnessing advanced technological capabilities and safeguarding human rights and dignity.
Al-Watan concluded that the conference offered a valuable platform for global dialogue, knowledge sharing, and agreement on clear principles to guide the ethical use of artificial intelligence.
