Qatar Deepens Strategic Partnership with NATO at Istanbul Cooperation Initiative Meeting

Brussels: The State of Qatar participated in the joint meeting between the NATO Council and member states of the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative (ICI) in Brussels. Charge d'Affaires at Qatar's Mission to the European Union and NATO, Sara bint Ahmed Al Mohannadi, represented the country at the meeting. She emphasized the importance of strengthening joint efforts amid rapidly evolving security and geopolitical developments, highlighting the need for partnerships based on mutual respect.

According to Qatar News Agency, Al Mohannadi reiterated Doha's status as a trusted NATO partner in supporting regional and global security and stability. Since joining the ICI in 2005, Qatar has expanded its cooperation with NATO in diplomacy, training, and operations. She announced that Qatar is in the final stages of establishing a regional NATO training center in Doha and preparing to sign the Individually Tailored Partnership Programs (ITPPs).

The diplomat also noted that Qatar is the only partner to have fully certified all units of its armed forces under NATO's Operational Capabilities Concept Evaluation and Feedback Program. She highlighted Qatar's mediation efforts, citing the Doha Framework Agreement signed in November 2025 between the Government of DR Congo and the Congo River Alliance (M23), and ongoing initiatives to reunite Ukrainian children.

Al Mohannadi pointed out shared opportunities between Qatar and NATO in areas such as maritime security, counter-terrorism, counter-extremism, and artificial intelligence, describing them as strategic priorities. She reaffirmed the strategic nature of Qatar's partnership with NATO and the country's commitment to further strengthening cooperation to support regional and global security and stability.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte commended Qatar's pivotal role in mediation and conflict resolution, its active engagement on the international stage, and its strong partnership with NATO, including hosting the bloc's training center.
