Doha: The Higher Committee for People's Assembly Elections in Syria announced the postponement of the electoral process in the governorates of Suwayda, Al Hasakah, and Raqqa, due to the security concerns prevailing in those regions. The Syrian Arab News Agency reached Dr. Nawar Najma, member of the Higher Committee for People's Assembly Elections and its media spokesperson, who highlighted that to ensure fair representation in the assembly for these three governorates, and given the ongoing security challenges in those governorates, the Higher Committee decided to put off the elections pending suitable conditions and a safe environment.
According to Qatar News Agency, the allocations of seats for these three governorates will remain preserved until the elections are conducted there at the earliest possible time. The elections were postponed because they constitute a sovereign matter and must be held within territories fully controlled by the state, where its official administrative apparatus exercises complete authority, Najma underlined.
Chairman of the Higher Committee for People's Assembly Elections in Syria, Mohammad Taha Al Ahmad, has so far indicated that, following the signing of the decree establishing the temporary electoral system, the timeline will require one week to select the subcommittees, then 15 days to appoint the electoral bodies, followed by three days to open the nomination period, and an additional week for campaigning and debates among the candidates.
He noted that the full electoral process is scheduled to take place between Sept. 15 and 20.
