NHRC to Organize International Conference on Impunity Next Month

Doha: The National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) announced that it will organize “The International Conference on The Crime of Aggression and Impunity: Challenges of International Accountability and the Protection of Human Rights,” on Oct. 6.

According to Qatar News Agency, the NHRC stated that numerous international and regional human rights organizations will participate in the one-day conference, which is expected to draw human rights activists from across the globe. The event will feature a high-level opening session and four main plenary sessions with participation from all attendees.

The NHRC highlighted that the conference aims to bolster the role of international protection mechanisms in the context of aggressive attacks, enforce international humanitarian and human rights law, curb violations from attacks, enhance accountability measures, and end impunity.

The conference also intends to highlight serious violations during state and people attacks, review international protection standards, and propose measures to improve their effectiveness. It seeks to reinforce efforts to end impunity and establish accountability and the rule of law.

In this context, HE Chairperson of the NHRC Maryam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah stated that the conference comes at a critical time, emphasizing the need for global human rights efforts to prevent impunity for crimes of aggression, genocide, and war crimes in the Gaza Strip. The conference serves as a platform advocating against impunity and for accountability.

Her Excellency mentioned that the conference will unite legal experts who will discuss international accountability challenges to protect human rights, particularly in conflict zones, and ensure justice for victims.

She stressed the importance of holding accountable those responsible for crimes in the Gaza Strip since Oct. 7, 2023, as failing to do so would tarnish humanity.

HE Al Attiyah urged human rights organizations to work together to bring justice to victims of the Israeli war machine.

Her Excellency noted that the conference will explore the legal context of aggression and accountability mechanisms, the impact of aggressive attacks on human rights, and ways to promote justice for victims.

She emphasized that new violations threaten human rights, highlighting crimes of genocide, starvation, and displacement by Israeli forces in the Gaza Strip and attacks on other regional countries.

Her Excellency reported that on Sep. 9, Israeli forces attacked a civilian area in Doha, Qatar, resulting in severe rights violations, including civilian casualties and deteriorating health conditions, calling for accountability for these actions.
