NHRC to Host Fourth National Forum on Human Rights and Drug Challenges

Doha: The National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) is set to hold its fourth national forum next Tuesday, focusing on the theme "Human Rights at the Core of Combating Drugs: Challenges and Prospects for Sustainable Solutions." The forum will take place on January 20 and 21 in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Development and Family, the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, and the Ministry of Public Health, alongside other key stakeholders.

According to Qatar News Agency, HE Deputy Chairman of the NHRC Dr. Mohammed bin Saif Al Kuwari emphasized the significance of this forum, highlighting the global challenges posed by drug and psychotropic substance trafficking. Dr. Al Kuwari noted that international studies have reported rising rates of drug use, which adversely impact human rights and hinder the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals.

During a press conference, Dr. Al Kuwari assured that Qatar remains free from severe risks associated with drug trafficking, attributing this to robust legislation and public policies. He stressed the importance of developing these measures to tackle the evolving methods used in drug smuggling and promotion.

The forum aims to adopt a human rights-based approach in legislation, counter-narcotics measures, and the rehabilitation of drug users, aligning with Qatar's national vision and international commitments. Dr. Al Kuwari also praised the Ministry of Interior's role in enforcing laws and implementing preventive measures against drugs.

Assistant Director of Human Rights Department at the Ministry of Interior, Brig. Gen. Saad Salem Al Dosari, highlighted the partnership between the Ministry of Interior and NHRC, resulting in various joint initiatives. Al Dosari explained that the forum serves as a platform for exchanging expertise in drug combat and supports the Ministry's strategic objectives for 2024-2030.

The forum will feature eight sessions, aiming to develop recommendations to enhance counter-narcotics efforts. Outcomes include establishing a unit for drug awareness and publishing a book compiling the forum's discussions and findings.
