Doha: The ministerial meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Contact Group on Somalia was held in Doha on Monday. The meeting aims to mobilize further international support to establish the foundations of security, development, and stability for the Somali people.
According to Qatar News Agency, HE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad Al Muraikhi emphasized that the meeting in Doha reaffirms a shared commitment to supporting Somalia and its people in their journey towards peace, stability, and development. He highlighted the complex challenges Somalia is currently facing, which threaten its security, stability, sovereignty, and economic growth, and stressed the need for unified efforts and support for Somali national paths based on an integrated and comprehensive vision.
HE Al Muraikhi underscored the importance of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Somalia, advocating for comprehensive national reconciliation through dialogue and inclusivity. This approach, he noted, would help bridge divides and strengthen state institutions on the foundations of partnership and trust.
HE Al Muraikhi also pointed out that political reforms are essential for state-building and enhancing stability in Somalia. These reforms include preparing for national elections, completing constitutional amendments, and supporting efforts to build transparent and effective democratic institutions. He called for inclusive processes involving all Somali stakeholders to ensure broad representation and legitimacy.
The Minister stressed the importance of complementing international efforts with the paths led by the Somali Federal Government, respecting its sovereignty and decision-making. He praised the joint efforts of the Quintet on Somalia, which includes Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Turkiye, and the USA, and highlighted the importance of continuing this constructive coordination to support Somali national paths.
HE Al Muraikhi acknowledged the significant security challenges Somalia faces, particularly from terrorist threats and local tensions. He emphasized supporting the federal government in enhancing its security capabilities and integrating community and development solutions within a comprehensive security approach.
He also addressed the humanitarian challenges due to drought, food insecurity, and internal displacement, calling for a coordinated international response. HE Al Muraikhi affirmed Qatar's commitment to providing humanitarian and development support through effective partnerships, emphasizing the need for initiatives to align with Somali government priorities.
