Lebanon’s President Welcomes Ceasefire in Gaza

Beirut: President of Lebanon General Joseph Aoun welcomed the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip, praising the international efforts made in this regard.

According to Qatar News Agency, President Aoun considered that the serious commitment of the Israeli entity to the terms of the agreement requires follow-up by the sponsoring countries and the United Nations. He noted that the Israeli entity is accustomed to evading its obligations and disavowing international resolutions, citing as evidence the attacks and violations of the ceasefire taking place in southern Lebanon.

He also reiterated his emphasis on the Palestinians' right to sovereignty over their state based on international legitimacy resolutions. He pointed out that the implementation of the new agreement will allow the return of displaced Palestinians to their homes to begin, coinciding with the need to launch the reconstruction process of the stricken Gaza.

The joint mediation efforts undertaken by the State of Qatar, in cooperation with Egypt and the United States, succeeded in reaching an agreement between the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) and Israel to ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and exchange prisoners and hostages. The agreement will enter into force next Sunday.
