Singapore: The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU): The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) announced Monday the five-year ban imposed on Kenyan runner Albert Korir, the 2021 New York City Marathon champion, for using a prohibited substance.
According to Qatar News Agency, the AIU stated that the 32-year-old runner tested positive for a banned substance that promotes red blood cell production. This suspension marks a significant setback in Korir's career, especially given his impressive track record in marathon events.
Korir is a marathon specialist, and his most notable achievements include winning the New York City Marathon in 2021, finishing second in 2019 and 2023, and third in 2024 and 2025. His consistent performance in one of the world's most prestigious marathons had established him as a prominent figure in the long-distance running community.
