Doha: Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al Sudani and the Commissioner General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, discussed on Sunday ways to provide support to the agency: The two leaders engaged in a dialogue focusing on enhancing the agency's capacity to deliver its mandate effectively.
According to Qatar News Agency, the meeting involved a thorough review of UNRWA's ongoing efforts to fulfill its mandate amidst the challenges and direct attacks it faces from Israeli occupying forces. Both parties stressed the necessity of halting the ongoing aggression and emphasized the urgent need to expedite humanitarian aid delivery to civilians in Gaza. They also discussed the importance of opening border crossings to facilitate aid distribution.
During the discussions, Al Sudani reaffirmed Iraq's commitment to supporting UNRWA's efforts. This commitment was further highlighted through Iraq's initiatives proposed at the Arab and Development Summits held in Baghdad on Saturday. Among these proposals was the establishment of a fund dedicated to the reconstruction of Gaza, underscoring Iraq's proactive approach in addressing the humanitarian crisis faced by the region.
