Baghdad: The Iraqi government Friday welcomed the announcement made by the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) regarding the commencement of the process of disarmament, declaring its full support for this process.
According to Qatar News Agency, the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs considered this step an important development that represents an effective start to the disarmament process and represents a real opportunity to support stability and enhance lasting reconciliation efforts in the region, contributing to ending cycles of violence and opening new horizons for understanding and peaceful coexistence.
It emphasized that this step paves the way for a new phase of constructive cooperation with neighboring Turkiye, based on joint action to address security challenges, in a manner that enhances the sovereignty of Iraq and Turkiye and preserves their security and stability.
It expressed hope that this initiative would contribute to turning the page on political, security, and social tensions and serve as a starting point for a responsible regional dialogue that addresses the roots of crises and enhances security and development for the benefit of all peoples of the region.
The Turkish peace process on Friday witnessed its first practical steps with the burning of 30 PKK fighters' weapons near Sulaymaniyah Governorate in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.
This comes as part of the party's previously announced commitment to abandon armed action after more than four decades of conflict.
