IPU Secretary-General Highlights Qatar’s Role in Global Mediation and Parliamentary Cooperation

Doha: HE Secretary-General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Martin Chungong, has emphasized the robust partnership between the State of Qatar, the Shura Council, and the IPU, highlighting their joint efforts in organizing events and activities across various levels and fields.

According to Qatar News Agency, Chungong praised Qatar's mediation efforts, especially during the 298th session of the IPU Executive Committee held in Doha. He noted that Qatar's reputation for trust and neutrality makes it a preferred destination for conflict resolution and mediation. He commended the State of Qatar for its successful hosting of recent events, including a parliamentary forum focused on social development, which took place during the Second World Summit for Social Development.

Chungong also underlined Qatar's consistent support for IPU activities, particularly in strengthening parliamentary efforts to support Middle Eastern peace processes. He expressed gratitude to Qatar for its commitment to the IPU's agenda, particularly in the areas of peace and security and sustainable development.

In his interview with QNA, Chungong highlighted Qatar's humanitarian efforts, noting the country's hosting of the Fifth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries in 2023. He emphasized the critical role of parliaments in supporting peace processes and holding governments accountable for international agreements.

Chungong also discussed the IPU's strategic direction, which includes developing a strategy for 2027-2031 focused on integrating emerging technologies like artificial intelligence for societal benefit. He stressed the importance of parliaments shaping legislative frameworks for responsible technological use and ensuring strong institutional presence globally.

As the year 2026 marks significant anniversaries in human rights, Chungong highlighted the IPU's commitment to reinforcing parliamentary contributions to global human rights efforts, emphasizing the role of parliaments in promoting and defending human rights worldwide.
