Four Killed, Hundreds Detained in Fuel Price Hike Protests in Angola

Luanda: Four people were killed and hundreds arrested on Tuesday as protests continued in several parts of the Angolan capital, Luanda.

According to Qatar News Agency, in a press conference, police spokesperson Mateus Rodrigues confirmed that more than 500 individuals had been detained, noting that shops, banks, buses, and private vehicles had been vandalized. He pointed out that what he described as pockets of disorder were still active in parts of Luanda.

The protests began on Monday and quickly escalated into looting, vandalism, and clashes with the police, following the government's decision earlier this month to raise the price of diesel by one-third, in an effort to ease the fiscal burden of costly fuel subsidies.

In the aftermath, associations representing minibus taxi drivers, who had raised fares by up to 50%, launched a three-day strike in protest of the move. The oil-producing nation in southern Africa began gradually phasing out fuel subsidies in 2023. Protests over gasoline price hikes at the time also descended into violence.
