Doha: Residents of Qatar are set to witness the Eta Aquarids meteor shower, which will reach its peak on Monday evening and continue until dawn on Tuesday, as reported by the Qatari Calendar House (QCH).
According to Qatar News Agency, Dr. Bashir Marzouk, an astronomer at QCH, explained that the meteor shower is notable for its peak rate of up to 50 meteors per hour. This annual celestial event is active from April 19 to May 28, with its peak on May 5, due to Earth passing through the dust particles left by Halley's Comet.
The meteor shower occurs when Earth intersects with the debris trail of Halley's Comet, creating visible flashes as particles interact with Earth's atmosphere. Marzouk highlighted that these showers result from Earth's proximity to the remnants and dust particles of comet debris.
Dr. Marzouk advised that optimal viewing requires a location free from environmental and light pollution. He noted that Qatar residents can observe the shower without telescopes, simply by looking towards the southeastern horizon from midnight until dawn.
He also mentioned that modern digital cameras, with extended exposure settings, can capture impressive images of the meteor shower.
