Agadir: The Egyptian national football team qualified for the quarterfinals of the CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after a hard-fought victory over Benin, securing a 3-1 win in extra time following a 1-1 draw in regular time.
According to Qatar News Agency, the Round of 16 match took place in Agadir, Morocco. Egypt initially took the lead in the 69th minute with a goal from Marwan Attia. However, Benin responded with an equalizer in the 83rd minute, courtesy of Jodel Dossou, which brought the match to a 1-1 draw at the end of regular time.
The deadlock was broken in the first extra-time period when Yasser Ibrahim scored Egypt's second goal in the seventh minute. Mohamed Salah then sealed Egypt's victory by adding a third goal in the final moments of the match.
Egypt is now set to face the winner of the upcoming match between Burkina Faso and Cote d'Ivoire, scheduled for Tuesday, in the quarterfinals.
