Doha: A high-level session at the Doha Forum 2025 on Sunday addressed global governance, multilateralism, and the governance of artificial intelligence and emerging technologies. The session brought together leading international decision-makers and experts in public policy and sustainable development.
According to Qatar News Agency, HE President of the 73rd Session of the United Nations General Assembly and Executive Director of Global Women Leaders (GWL Voices) Maria Fernanda Espinosa emphasized that the fundamental challenges to effective global cooperation lie in three key areas including managing the increasing interdependence of nations, providing and ensuring global public goods such as peace and a secure environment, and aligning self-interest and national interests with the common good. SHe noted that the era of interdependence necessitates a rethinking of the concept of national sovereignty and the adoption of the idea of shared sovereignty and collective responsibility, while strengthening the role of the United Nations as a global platform for convergence and international decision-making.
For his part, HE Chair of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) Board, Stefan Lofven stressed the importance of reforming the multilateral system and protecting human rights globally. He explained that the Institute's 2023 report presented six key recommendations for strengthening global governance. These included reforming the multilateral system to ensure inclusivity, addressing the triple planetary crises, restructuring the global financial system, bridging the digital divide, promoting peace and prevention, and developing proactive strategies to address future crises. He noted that these measures are essential to confronting complex global challenges and achieving sustainable development.
Meanwhile, Director, Pact for the Future Implementation at the Executive Office of the UN Secretary-General Themba Kalua, pointed out that countries' commitment to implementing the Future Compact represents a crucial step towards building a more just, sustainable, and peaceful world, based on intergenerational solidarity and equality. He affirmed that the Compact provides a roadmap for international cooperation in the fields of artificial intelligence and sustainable development and encourages countries to develop data-driven policies that are relevant to their local and regional contexts.
For Her part, Co-President, Global Fund for a New Economy (GFNE) Dr. Adriana Abdenur affirmed that the world is experiencing an unprecedented widening of the inequality gap. SHe stressed that addressing economic and social disparities is essential for achieving justice and stability and supported this by establishing an international body to monitor policies related to inequality and provide evidence to decision-makers. This would ensure the equitable distribution of economic and social benefits, fostering global growth.
Director of the International Indicators and International Cooperation Department at the National Planning Council Ahmed Khalid Al Sumaiti concluded the session by reiterating that the State of Qatar is committed to supporting global governance and international initiatives aimed at promoting justice and sustainable development. He noted that cooperation between governments, international institutions, the private sector, and civil society forms the foundation for building a more just and prosperous future for generations to come.
