Death Toll from Myanmar Quake Rises to 1,644 Fatalities

Yangon: The death toll from the massive earthquake that hit Myanmar on Friday and felt by the population of a neighboring country has jumped to 1,644 fatalities.

According to Qatar News Agency, the ruling military council in Myanmar reported in a statement on Saturday, quoted by official media, that 30 people are still missing, while infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and buildings has been damaged.

The earthquake caused 3,408 injuries, mostly in Mandalay, the second-largest city in Burma and the most affected, while it remains difficult to assess the extent of the disaster, especially due to the disruption of communications, the authorities in Myanmar reported.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the earthquake occurred in an area located 16 km northwest of the city of Sagaing, at a depth of 10 km, highlighting that, based on predictive models, the death toll could exceed 10,000 people, amid widespread devastation that may surpass the impact on the country's gross domestic product.

On Friday, the USGS had announced the occurrence of a powerful earthquake, registering a magnitude of 7.7 on the Richter scale, in the central region of Myanmar.
