China Summons Japanese Ambassador over PM Takaichi’s Remarks on Taiwan

China: China has summoned the Japanese ambassador in Beijing to lodge a formal protest over remarks by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi concerning Taiwan.

According to Qatar News Agency, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong summoned Japanese Ambassador Kenji Kanasugi on Thursday and delivered a stern demarche regarding what Beijing described as Takaichi's "erroneous" statements about Taiwan.

Speaking in the Diet last week, Takaichi said that a Chinese military attack on Taiwan could constitute a "survival-threatening situation" for Japan, potentially prompting Tokyo to exercise its right to "collective self-defense."

When asked about circumstances that might trigger such a situation, Takaichi replied, "If there are battleships and the use of force, no matter how you think about it, it could constitute a survival-threatening situation."
