At Least 46 Killed in Floods in Indian-Administered Kashmir

Srinagar: At least 46 people were killed Thursday in floods caused by heavy rains that hit a village in the Himalayas in Indian-administered Kashmir. Muhammad Irshad, a disaster management official, confirmed the death toll and mentioned that several individuals were missing.

According to Qatar News Agency, 150 injured people were rescued from the disaster site, with 50 of them in serious condition. All the injured have been transferred to nearby hospitals for treatment. Rescue teams are encountering challenges in accessing the affected area, but soldiers have joined the rescue efforts to assist.

Floods and landslides are common occurrences in India during the rainy season, which spans from June to September. However, experts suggest that climate change is contributing to an increase in the frequency and severity of such events. The United Nations World Meteorological Organization reported last year that the rising severity of floods and droughts is a precursor to future challenges, as climate change complicates predictions of the Earth's water cycle.
