Arab League Calls for Further Funding for Maternal, Child Health Services Coinciding World Health Day 2025

Doha: The Arab League has called for increased investment and funding for maternal and child health services to reduce maternal and child mortality.

According to Qatar News Agency, In a statement coinciding World Health Day 2025, Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the Social Affairs Sector Haifa Abu Ghazaleh said that focusing on maternal and child health is an opportunity for all to raise awareness of sound health practices and cooperate to invest in maternal and newborn health, especially given the alarming global statistics in this regard. She stressed the importance of intensifying joint action to end preventable maternal and newborn deaths, especially in areas with limited services, and the need for an effective and sustainable response to improve the quality of healthcare during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum.

Abu Ghazaleh added that this year's theme "Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures" aims to urge governments and the healthcare community to intensify efforts to end preventable maternal and newborn deaths and prioritize women's long-term health and well-being. According to global data, more than 300,000 women lose their lives during pregnancy and childbirth each year, and more than two million babies die in their first month of life.
