Baghdad: The 20th session of the Arab civil defense and civil protection summit is set to take place in Baghdad on August 27 and 28, with participation from heads of civil defense agencies across Arab nations.
According to Qatar News Agency, Nuaas Sabah Shakir, director of media at the Iraqi Civil Defense Directorate, confirmed that all necessary preparations to host the conference have been finalized. Shakir emphasized that Iraq, as a founding member of the Arab civil protection office in Tunisia, has consistently contributed to the organization since its first conference in June 1987. Iraq has actively engaged in these efforts by regularly participating and presenting studies and research that have significantly enhanced Arab cooperation in civil protection.
Shakir further explained that Iraq's membership in the Arab civil protection office underscores its commitment to sharing expertise, staying abreast of scientific and technical advancements in protection and rescue operations, and bolstering international collaboration to tackle disasters. Notable examples of Iraq's contributions include its rescue team mission to Turkiye following the 2023 earthquake and its recent assistance to Syria in extinguishing fires in Latakia.
