Doha: A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of the New Ireland region in Papua New Guinea on Saturday.
According to Qatar News Agency, the quake occurred at a depth of 72 kilometers and about 115 kilometers southeast of the city of Kokopo. It is important to note that a 5.4-magnitude earthquake also shook the western New Britain province in northeastern Papua New Guinea the day before yesterday, Thursday.
Papua New Guinea lies within the so-called "Ring of Fire," a seismically active zone along the Pacific Ocean's edges that is known for frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity. The region is home to 90 percent of the world's active volcanoes.
In February 2018, Papua New Guinea experienced a devastating earthquake that claimed the lives of at least 100 people and triggered landslides that buried dozens of villages.
