Doha: An earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale struck on Monday the northeastern Indian state of Assam. The US Geological Survey reported that the epicenter of the quake was 3 km outside the village of Ding, near the Indian border with Bhutan.
According to Qatar News Agency, this region experiences major earthquakes every year and has been the site of some of India's largest and most devastating earthquakes. The historical context highlights the seismic vulnerability of the area with the 1950 earthquake that killed approximately 4,800 people in Assam and Tibet. Further emphasizing the region's seismic activity, the 1897 Great Assam Earthquake is believed to have been one of the most powerful earthquakes to hit India, killing hundreds in remote hill regions.
