5.3-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Northern Chile

Antofagasta: An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale struck Antofagasta Province in northern Chile on Thursday. The seismic event was recorded with its epicenter located 29 kilometers from the city of Calama and at a depth of 111 kilometers.

According to Qatar News Agency, there have been no reports of material damage or human losses as a result of the quake. The incident comes as a reminder of the region's seismic activity, which is part of the broader geological context.

In 2010, Chile experienced a devastating 8.8-magnitude earthquake followed by a tsunami that struck the central and southern regions, resulting in the deaths of 500 people. The country is situated on the Ring of Fire, an area known for its frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity due to the numerous tectonic rifts surrounding the Pacific Ocean basin.
