US, Russian Presidents Discuss Ukraine War, Middle East Developments on Phone

Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin held a phone call Thursday with his American counterpart Donald Trump to discuss the latest developments in the war in Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East.

According to Qatar News Agency, Yuri Ushakov, aide to the Russian President, stated in a press briefing that the two leaders discussed the ongoing conflict between Moscow and Kyiv during the nearly hour-long call. He noted that the US President reiterated his call for a swift cessation of military operations.

In response, the Russian President reaffirmed his commitment to the objectives of Russia's military campaign in Ukraine, which he described as aimed at eliminating all root causes that led to the current situation. Ushakov added that Putin briefed Trump on the progress made in implementing the humanitarian aspects of the Istanbul Agreements, reached during the second round of direct Russian-Ukrainian negotiations in Istanbul, Turkiye.

The Russian official also noted that the two sides discussed the Iranian issue and the broader situation in the Middle East in considerable detail, emphasizing Russia's call for resolving all disputes and conflicts through political and diplomatic means only.

Ushakov confirmed that the presidents also addressed developments in Syria, stating that the Russian and American sides will continue their dialogue on developments in Syria.

They also discussed a number of joint strategic economic projects in the fields of energy and space exploration, though no bilateral meeting was scheduled in the near future.
