Doha: The United States military announced, Monday, that it has thwarted Iranian attacks in the Strait of Hormuz and sunk six Iranian boats that were targeting civilian ships in the strait.
According to Qatar News Agency, US Central Command (CENTCOM) commander, Adm. Brad Cooper stated that the military has managed to open a mine-free narrow trade corridor in the Strait of Hormuz, aiming to allow commercial vessels to pass through. A defensive umbrella has been established, including helicopters and fighter jets, to provide protection for cargo ships leaving the strait, he added.
Adm. Cooper noted that Iran had launched several cruise missiles, drones, and small boats toward ships under US military protection, emphasizing that all threats were successfully neutralized without exception. The CENTCOM commander declined to comment on whether the truce agreement between Iran and the United States has ended, but indicated that Iran had initiated aggressive behavior in the strait.
He further mentioned that the US military is acting in a defensive capacity to provide clear protection for commercial maritime traffic and enable ships to depart the Arabian Gulf safely.
