Washington: The US Department of Homeland Security announced on Wednesday the termination of the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Venezuelan migrants in the United States. This decision marks the end of the designation granted during the Biden administration.
According to Qatar News Agency, the Department of Homeland Security stated that Venezuela no longer fulfills the requirements necessary for TPS. This status is generally granted to individuals from countries experiencing natural disasters, armed conflict, or other extraordinary situations, allowing them temporary protection from deportation and work authorization in the US.
A spokesperson from the Department of Homeland Security highlighted several factors influencing the decision, including public safety, national security, migration dynamics, immigration policy, economic considerations, and foreign policy. It was concluded that extending temporary residency for Venezuelan nationals does not align with America’s best interests.
According to data from the Congressional Research Service, over 256,000 Venezuelans were beneficiaries of TPS under the designation made in 2021, which is scheduled to expire on September 10. The decision to end this protection began during Donald Trump’s presidency, with initial steps taken in February. Although a federal court initially blocked the move in March, the US Supreme Court subsequently allowed the federal government to proceed with deportations.
