UNHRC Unanimously Adopts Resolution to Hold Emergency Debate on Israeli Attack on Qatar

Geneva: The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) on Monday unanimously adopted a resolution to hold an emergency debate on Tuesday concerning the armed attack launched by Israel on the State of Qatar on September 9, within the framework of the 60th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva. According to Qatar News Agency, HE Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva, Bilal Ahmad, on behalf of the Member States of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Group in Geneva, and HE Permanent Representative of the State of Kuwait to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva, Nasser Al Hayyen, on behalf of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries in Geneva, outlined the objectives of requesting this emergency debate in their communications to the President of the Human Rights Council. In his address, HE Permanent Representative of Algeria to the United Nations Office and Internation al Organizations in Geneva, Rachid Bladehane, representing the Arab Group, articulated the Arab Group's stance and endorsed the call by the GCC and OIC to convene an emergency discussion session. During the session, HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Office in Geneva, Dr. Hind Abdulrahman Al Muftah, stressed that the emergency discussion is an opportunity for peace-loving nations to express their condemnation of the attack and for the Human Rights Council to uphold its mandate to promote universal respect for human rights values and principles as outlined in General Assembly resolution 60/251. Her Excellency expressed optimism that this emergency discussion would reflect the seriousness and unity of the Human Rights Council in addressing the consequences of the military attack on human rights, which is part of a pattern of violations and crimes by Israel in the region amid the international community's inability to hold it accountable. Her Excellency highlighted that Qa tar, an active member of the Human Rights Council, the United Nations, OIC, and GCC, was attacked due to its mediating role in hosting negotiations and facilitating dialogue for a ceasefire, emphasizing the importance of negotiation over force, which has resulted in genocide, war crimes, and human rights violations. She added that instead of being acknowledged for its humanitarian role, Qatar was targeted by an attack from the party it was engaging with to achieve a peaceful settlement. HE Al Muftah emphasized that the attack on a country hosting negotiations sends a message from the perpetrator that it does not value peaceful dialogue or negotiation and disregards human lives, including its own. Her Excellency noted that the Israeli Prime Minister is isolating Israel internationally and turning it into a rogue state, suggesting that the attack on Qatar indicates a lack of good faith in negotiations and a threat to regional security and stability. Her Excellency concluded that arbitrary force, lacking leg itimacy and wisdom, has historically led to destruction and not security or stability. History shows that chaos breeds destruction.
