Geneva: The UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) ratified, without a vote, a resolution addressing the human rights implications of unprovoked attacks by Iran on Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait, and Jordan.
According to Qatar News Agency, the resolution was co-sponsored by more than 100 countries. Qatar condemned the missile and drone attacks by Iran, calling them a violation of its sovereignty and a breach of the UN Charter's principles, particularly the prohibition of force.
Dr. Hind Abdulrahman Al Muftah, Qatar's Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, delivered Qatar's statement during the Human Rights Council's urgent debate on the implications of the attacks. She highlighted that the attacks compromise global peace and security and undermine human rights.
Al Muftah emphasized that the attacks on civilians and infrastructure violate international law, including humanitarian and human rights laws. She noted that critical facilities like airports and energy plants were targeted, posing threats to regional security and fundamental rights.
The attacks caused civilian casualties and disrupted services, violating rights to life, health, and safety. Al Muftah stressed the ecological impact of targeting energy and water facilities, affecting vulnerable groups.
Targeting the Strait of Hormuz raises concerns about global economic impacts. Al Muftah urged for the protection of civilian infrastructure and navigation freedom as legal obligations.
She argued that the attacks on Qatar, a non-combatant nation, violate international law and affect global peace. Qatar, she noted, supports peaceful dialogue and mediation for dispute resolution.
Qatar welcomed Security Council Resolution 2817 (2026), condemning Iran's attacks and recognizing them as international law violations. Al Muftah called for effective remedies and reparations for victims and stressed the importance of human rights, peace, security, and development.
She urged for de-escalation and diplomacy to protect regional security and human rights. Al Muftah called on Human Rights Council members to ratify the resolution to prevent further violations.
