Seoul: The Council of Presidents of the United Nations General Assembly (UNCPGA) convened in Seoul, South Korea, under the leadership of Dr. Han Seung-soo. Attending the meeting was HE Nassir bin Abdulaziz Al Nasser, President of the 66th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
According to Qatar News Agency, this marked the sixth meeting of the Council since its re-establishment in October 2022. During the session, the members reiterated their commitment to the principles and objectives outlined in the UN Charter, emphasizing the promotion of peace, security, and human rights.
The meeting saw the participation of nine former Presidents of the General Assembly, with Philemon Yang, the current President of the General Assembly, delivering the keynote address. The Council expressed its unwavering support for the Assembly’s priorities, encapsulated in the slogan “Unity in Diversity,” focusing on revitalizing the Assembly and enhancing the role of the Office of the President of the Assembly.
The Counci
l voiced deep concern over the escalating armed conflicts globally, the increasing polarization within the international community, and the geopolitical divisions. It highlighted serious violations of the UN Charter and international law, urging bold leadership to advance multilateralism.
Particular attention was given to the humanitarian crisis in the Middle East, with the Council expressing grave concern over civilian casualties in Gaza. It condemned an Israeli law that obstructs the operations of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) and called for immediate humanitarian access.
The Council also condemned Israeli attacks on UN forces in Lebanon and expressed alarm over the civilian casualties there. Additionally, it welcomed ongoing ceasefire negotiations in Qatar and urged all conflicting parties to pursue sincere diplomatic efforts as a precursor to implementing a comprehensive peace plan based on a two-state solution, aligned with relevant Security Council and Gener
al Assembly resolutions, and fostering regional economic cooperation.
Further, the Council expressed apprehension over the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, stressing the necessity for an immediate cessation of hostilities and the prevention of nuclear escalation. Concerns were also raised regarding the worsening humanitarian situation in Sudan, with calls to bolster UN efforts in the region.
The Council addressed the opportunities and challenges posed by artificial intelligence, deciding to establish a committee of experts to propose a global framework for its regulation. Additionally, it agreed to create a trust fund to support its management work.
The declaration underscored the Council’s commitment to international cooperation and its dedication to exploring avenues to enhance peace and security amidst current global challenges.
