UN Security Council Unanimously Extends UNIFIL Mandate in Lebanon for Final Time

Cairo: The UN Security Council on Thursday unanimously adopted a resolution extending the mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) for the final time, until Dec. 31, 2026, with a withdrawal plan and the commencement of a coordinated drawdown and withdrawal process during 2027 within a one-year period.

According to Qatar News Agency, in its resolution, drafted by France, the Security Council called for the full implementation of Resolution 1701 and reiterated its strong support for full respect for the Blue Line and a complete cessation of hostilities.

The resolution called on the Israeli entity to withdraw its forces from north of the Blue Line and five positions within Lebanese territories.

The resolution also called on the Lebanese authorities to deploy to any positions vacated by the Israeli entity with UN support.

The resolution urged the international community to intensify its support, including equipment, supplies, and funds, for the Lebanese Army to ensure its effective and sustainable deployment south of the Litani River and enhance its capacity to implement Resolution 1701.
