UN Secretary-General Warns of Impact of US Aid Cuts on Humanitarian Assistance

Doha: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned the administration of US President Donald Trump about the effects of cuts to humanitarian aid budgets, calling them contrary to Washington’s interests.

According to Qatar News Agency, Guterres stated that reducing the humanitarian role and impact of the United States goes against American interests worldwide, adding that he can only hope that these decisions will be reconsidered after further review.

He emphasized that US funding directly supports people affected by wars, famines, and disasters in regions such as Gaza, Sudan, Afghanistan, Syria, and Ukraine, providing essential healthcare, shelter, clean water, food, and education.

Last Wednesday, the Trump administration announced significant cuts to US international aid, slashing 92% of funding for USAID’s development and foreign aid programs. The administration stated that the move would save American taxpayers approximately $60 billion.

On his first day in office, Trump signed an executive order freezing all US foreign aid for 90 days to allow his administration to review international spending. The United States is considered the world’s largest donor of humanitarian and development aid.
