UN Rights Office Reports 3,384 Civilian Deaths in Sudan in 1st Half of 2025

Khartoum: The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights announced a sharp rise in civilian casualties in Sudan, with at least 3,384 deaths recorded between January and June 2025 amid escalating ethnically driven violence.

According to Qatar News Agency, the report released Friday revealed that the majority of victims were in Darfur, accounting for nearly 80% of all documented civilian fatalities in Sudan last year. Most deaths resulted from artillery shelling, airstrikes, and drone attacks in densely populated areas.

The report highlighted significant casualties during the Rapid Support Forces' assault on El Fasher and the Zamzam and Abu Shouk displacement camps in April.

It also documented at least 990 summary executions during the same period, with a threefold increase in such incidents from February to April.

The armed conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces has continued since April 2023, resulting in over 20,000 deaths and the displacement of approximately 14 million people, according to local and UN sources.
