Juba: The United Nations announced that more than 1,800 civilians were killed in South Sudan between January and September, highlighting the country's precarious situation amid escalating political tensions.
According to Qatar News Agency, a statement by the UN Human Rights Office confirmed that at least 1,854 people were killed, 1,693 injured, and 423 abducted in the context of ongoing conflicts in the country during the first nine months of the year.
Volker Turk, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, "This is unacceptable and must stop." He expressed concern for the civilians in South Sudan and urged both national leaders and the international community to take decisive actions to avert further disaster.
The report indicates a 59% increase in documented victims compared to the same period last year. It also suggests that the actual figures might be higher due to challenges in verifying incidents amid the deteriorating security conditions.
