Geneva: UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix has warned of growing threats from landmines and explosive devices, driven by ongoing conflicts in multiple regions including Gaza, Ukraine, and Sudan. Lacroix highlighted the alarming statistic that an average of one person is killed every day by landmines, with children often being the victims. He emphasized that severe funding constraints are affecting demining efforts worldwide.
According to Qatar News Agency, Lacroix, speaking in Geneva, underscored the necessity for coordinated international cooperation to tackle the landmine threat. This effort requires collaboration among the United Nations, NGOs, and member states. Lacroix described landmine incidents as a reflection of the hazardous environments in which peacekeepers are required to operate.
Lacroix also pointed to the operational challenges that are linked to worsening security conditions across the globe. He noted the spread of misinformation and emerging threats fueled by modern technology as additional complications. These challenges not only endanger peacekeeping missions but also hinder effective demining operations.
Furthermore, Lacroix warned of the financial pressures that peacekeeping missions are facing due to budget cuts and unpaid or partially paid contributions by member states. He also mentioned the political challenges arising from divisions within the international community, which further complicate efforts to address the landmine crisis.
